I still believe that Cutch has pain in his knee. It's no coincidence he wasn't in the lineup Monday. If slowing down a bit on certain plays saves his knee a little wear and tear than I have no problem with it. Cutch had ZERO chance to break up that double-play and he knew it. To pull away from the base path was smart baseball not half-assing.

Cole is looking very hittable today. He had been missing the glove a lot. Even his k was on a pitch he missed pretty badly. Hope he gets it together soon.

Lacking command. It happens. I have a feeling he'll do what aces do when they don't have their best stuff: compete and keep his team in the game.

Are we as bad in these situations as it seems like we are? Seems like we routinely fail to get the run in from 3rd with fewer than two outs.

On the other hand, I don't feel like we have deserved any of these runs.

Polanco still needs to learn how to hit at this level. He's a minus in RF at this point in time. OPS+ of 82. Not sure what is missing. To the naked eye it looks like he's just off: like his body and bat aren't moving in unison. It's rare you see that beautiful swing of his. You see slapping and squatting down to hit low pitches and so forth.

I'd bet my left nut that it has something to do with thigh gap.

The offense has been a pile of dog crap on this home stand so far. Maybe a few of these lucky runs will get things going.

Yeah. Couple of ways to look at it.

One, this team still isn't hitting the ball well on this home stand (and for the season isn't living up to our high expectations).

On the other hand, speed is a strength on this team and those infield hits happen because of it. It's actually pretty fun to see other teams disappointed at how the Bucs make something out of nothing.

Would love to be able to watch this one. Cole is worth watching even without his best stuff and it looks like we're gonna score some runs.
Get it?

Nothing I have seen in Cutch's career tells me he had any chance of throwing that guy out regardless.

Same guy on base next time. Marte catches a fly way deeper than McCutchen's and freezes at second because he knows better than to test him. Granted, that's 2nd to 3rd & not 3rd to home. Still, McCutchen conceded the run. Even if he two-hops it in it's at least close.

IMO

Kang: OPS+ 111
WAR: 1.2
DWAR (I only include this for those who think he shouldn't start due to defense): 0.3

Mercer: OPS+ 58
WAR: -0.1
DWAR: 0.4

Harrison: OPS+ 90
WAR: 0.5
DWAR: 0.4

Conclusion: For now Kang should be getting starts 6 days a week between 3B and SS (mostly at SS). For the record, I'm not saying Kang can keep it up. He may very well regress. But I'd like to see what happens.

This team makes way too many outs on the base paths. WAY too many.

Fair enough. I am not really defending Cutch anyway, as he does not have a very good arm. It is probably the only real tool he lacks. Anyway, he definitely could have made a much better effort on that play and needs to get better at setting up to throw in general. I just don't think he was ever going to throw the runner out in that situation unless something fluky happened. But that doesn't excuse the weak effort.

Polanco could have been out on the basepaths multiple times already today.

Watson doesn't have it today. Gotta score in the bottom of the 8th.
