Either way, it would be nice for at least one of them to wake the fuck up and OPS .750 or more like they did from this point on last season.

Someone brought this up on the radio yesterday, but why is Harrison getting so much shit (justifiably) for his slow start and Mercer is essentially getting a free pass?

Is it the contract Harrison signed? Is it because Mercer has already shown he can rebound from slow start? Is it because Mercer is playing a position where offense is at a premium?

Just curious, because Mercer is hitting .186/.245/.216 and is slugging nearly 100 points LOWER than Harrison.

Duh. Because Harrison is black.

I give Mercer a half season pass for not being Clint Barmes.

Nice to see JHay heating up. In today's pathetic loss he went 4 for 6 with a HR and two doubles.

I don't have all his updated numbers but his average is up to .222. He raised it like fifty points this week.

For those concerned with Jordy Mercer, and I'm really not ... I think the guy is a good all-around everyday shortstop, he has apparently been one of the most unlikely players in baseball this season, accd to 538.

http://fivethirtyeig...an-in-baseball/

His predicted OPS, based off batted ball velocity, is .745. It was .480 Friday morning. His BABIP is .216, 74 points below his career average. His line drive percentage is 25, 3 points above league average. The guy is fine imo. Just needs some luck.

Seems to be coming out of the hitting slump but wtf happened to his defense? Seven errors at third base already after only six combined at all positions last year. Seemed like a nobrainer that the defense at third base would be greatly improved this season. He could be making a run at Pedro's total of 25 errors in 2014.

Not picking on Harrison. At times, it seems the whole team isn't as good fundamentally as they were last year.
"We’ll be comfortable adding one (starter),” he said. “We’ll be comfortable adding nobody if it’s just not there. We don’t feel we are driven to force it. If we can add one that makes sense for us, that’s great. If we can add two that make sense … then we do that.”
Opie Taylor. In a decisive moment.

I think the analysts would say he's been "pressing" to substantiate his contract. I hope we look back and see that a switch was flipped for him in mid-May.

That bat speed is too good to slump for long. He carried the team during periods of time last season, an as I recall led the team from a losing record to an winning one. He was the difference maker last year. Hopeful he can be that again.

This Bucsdugout article suggests J-Hay has sucked because he's not laying off outside pitches.

JHay Update:

145 ABs/10 2Bs/0 3Bs/4 HRs

.255 Avg/.289 OBP/.407 SLG/.696 OPS/88 +

He's really come to life over the last week or so. After he couldn't buy a hit, now everything that touches his bat is dropping in for a hit.

Meanwhile Jordy Mercer is still sucking serious balls. I'd give him until the end of this series with the Mets. If he doesn't start coming to life, I'd send him to the bench and let Kang start at SS.

We can't continue to have a SS that doesn't hit for the first third of the season. Take his scholarship away already. Even Clint Barmes was never this bad.

Haven't done a JHay update in a couple of weeks:

204 ABs/15 2B/0 3B/4 HR

.265 Avg/.304 OBP/.397 SLG/.701 OPS/92 OPS +

He's leveled off since his ice cold streak and his on fire streak, but he's slowly inching his way toward respectability.

Good for him, good for us.

His BABip is down from last year's unsustainable .353, but I don't think we'll see a dramatic increase from his current .227. I just don't think he'll maintain one near, let alone above, .300.

His BABIP thus far this season is .296.
