yeah at worst he'd be an extremely useful bench player/4th OFer. there was just no reason for that trade other than saving the Nuttings a million or 2

He's a fourth outfielder and lefty first baseman if Pedro sucks.

Especially since Nutting was talking about how he'll rest McCutchen more. Would be nice to have a bat that could be relied upon in those situations.

Not to mention that this is the NL, and you never go a game without pinch-hitting somebody. Snider was very capable in that role last year. This year we have a bunch of unknowns and Sean Rodriguez, who is a known quantity, but also known to be too light-hitting for the first guy off the bench.

Exactly. If the Bucs had kept Snider, their payroll would be a fucking disaster, resulting in:

No they wouldn't.

@McCulloughStar: Volquez is pitching quite well today. His tempo has been outstanding. Letting the defense do their job. Needed just 46 pitches for 5 IP.

The Giants just beat the Padres 1 to 0 in 12 innings, with the decisive run scored stemming from a dropped pop-up by defensive specialist Clint Barmes.

@JeffWilson_FWST: #Rangers continue to pluck from the waiver wire, claiming RHP Stolmy Pimentel from Pirates. RHP Lisalverto Bonilla (elbow) to 60-day DL.

Will we receive anything for Stolmy, or is he effectively a free agent?

I think the Pirates have so many days to either pull him off waivers or work a trade. Most likely, they will just let him go.

Okay thanks. Certainly can't expect anything significant in return. There's always a chance another Caminero comes of it I guess. Probably end up being a cash deal.

-Jerry Sands knocked in a pair of runs with his double in the bottom of the 8th, pulling the Indians even with the Tigers. The Cleveland right fielder is now 3-for-4 with 4 RBI today

Pimentel was on outright waivers. There's no pulling him back. He gone.

Don't know if this counts since he never played a game for the Pirates, but Clint Robinson earned a spot on probably the best team in baseball (Go Bucs' Nats) and had three hits today. Nuts.

Snider with a three run dinger in a BAL loss this afternoon.
In any human group, family, tribe, (or baseball team), there are norms - shared expectations of behavior. Any member who deviates from these norms calls into question the basic values of the group. And groups don't like to have their basic values questioned. It makes them nervous. - Jim Bouton in Ball Four Plus Ball Five

What about doctors who make house calls? Repairmen who know how to fix things? And ballplayers who hustle? And boxers who get carried out of the ring, instead of quitting because of stomach cramps? And what about the death penalty for scum who take a human life and snuff it out like it's so much garbage? I've seen the past, gentlemen, and it works. - William Shatner as T.J. Hooker in episode 1.1 'The Protectors'

It seems likely that removing the sense of closure from book writing will, in time, alter writer's attitudes toward their work. The pressure to achieve perfection will diminish, along with the artistic rigor that the pressure imposed. - Nicholas Carr from The Shallows

Yeah, but the Nuttings really needed the $2 million he got paid to put new seats on a chairlift or something.

Snider's OPS is 1.133. But hey, we have Andrew Lambo.
