Just because it seems relevant again:

Hey, all of your political posting on a message board in a thread unrealted to politics really changed my mind on this issue and turned me around. Thanks so much for changing my mind with all your rhetoric.

-Nobody Ever

I'm not saying this to be argumentative, but as someone with varied views that never quite fit either candidate from the two party system, I have come across some things in these types of threads that I do find are things that help in selecting one or the other. Obviously I follow up and check the facts from more valid sources but sometimes I do see things here and find the debates interesting.

And yes, right now I'm still on the undecided line.

Plus, at least you see counter-arguments here. Unlike on facebook where some friends post a new one-sided post everyday. What I find unexpected is (in my friends) it is the left that does this more than the right.

And that's fine, but when 1/2 the threads on the board get hijacked by people wanting to debate the pros and cons of Obama's time in office, it gets old to me.

I get that but it seems like it's just the NASA thread and this one right now so it's not bothering me too much.

Another angle of criticism would be that some people are becoming so desensitized to public shootings that today's NYC shooting barely disrupted the political argument in this thread.
IS THIS THE GAME THREAD???

Yeah...that seems like 2 threads to me. I'm not seeing the big deal.

Me neither.

I think I would be more willing to accept the anti-Obama position from you and monarch and the others who dislike him if there wasn't so much vitriol. Monarchs posts are always incendiary and often include some name like assbag, or dipshit, etc.

I understand the fear of the national debt to a degree but some of the arguments I've heard against Obama and for Romney are quibbles. The entire debate about the welfare program is a joke. Both sides ads are packs of lies.

My biggest complaint is that more than half of the discretionary spending budget is slated for defense. It seems that Republicans are more interested in killing people around the world than they are about educating the people of their own country, or even keeping them alive with health care. This might sound naive to some of you, but Republicans are constantly talking about spending less money, but are never willing to defund the war machine. Democrats are the same way, but I feel like they would have an easier time accepting military budget cuts than the Republicans.

There is one other possibility: This exorbitant defense spending is not to guard against a terrestrial enemy, but rather, advanced civilizations from beyond the Earth, the presence of which the United States has been aware since the 1930's-1940's. That would at least make more sense to me than continuing to create weaponry to blow the world up many times over.

Not all defense spending is for "killing people around the world" and perhaps surprisingly a portion of the budget goes precisely towards education.

A portion also goes to medical research.

And that's fine...but it seems like there's a reason Sean set up a Politics thread page. If I'm in the minority and people enjoy the Monarch/Winter "Obama Sucks" posts and those from Sloshy and others on the other side, have at it.

Go post happy thoughts in the NHL thread.

3. Plus, Republicans have always been of the mindset that defense spending = jobs = stimulated economy. Yet then, they also look the other way while their wealthy friends outsource jobs overseas.

I don't think there is much of a difference between the government contracting private companies and spending on defense than the government hiring people directly and paying them a pension, etc. to do some job that doesn't contribute to global destruction.

I know that some defense spending goes to veteran benefits, R&D, etc. But we are spending wayyyyyyy to much on other stuff, like weaponry, failed experiments like the Osprey, etc. I'm not sure I agree with spending on that kind of thing.

I don't know hat tax bracket you are in monarch, but I haven't seen my taxes go up since Obama was elected, and though I disagree with the bank bailouts and so called "Obamacare" (not because its socialist but because it's not socialist enough) I am not willing to hand the government over to a rich guy and his cronies who will only use the government to keep the rich in power and the poor uneducated and broke.

Apparently the shooter only shot the person he killed. The other nine people were apparently shot by police.

NYT Metro Desk @NYTMetro 2m
Most or all 9 #EmpireState bystanders maybe shot by NYPD. Johnson had 8 bullets max. Shot 5 at Ercolino, 2 left in gun, 1 unfired on ground.

A huge portion goes to vet benefits, especially retirement and medical.

I wonder why those arent lumped in as welfare programs?

But lets be honest, money goes to the military complex because they gets votes from them and far more importantly it gets huge campaign contributions. The two large military complexes in our town pay at least 50% above wages elsewhere in town. And guess what, they give tons of campaign contributions to the people who keep funding them.

About 15% of the defense budget goes to veterans benefits and pension. The includes stuff like pensions, medical benefits and education benefits. Expect that number to go way up in the future as wounded veterans from the last two wars require more medical care.

This thread has been hijacked beyond belief. Too bad, becauase there would actually be a lot of thread-relevant stuff to talk about today, like the New York Times' decision to run a graphic photo of this morning's victim on the front page of their website:

http://www.theatlant...wsworthy/56186/

I saw another graphic street-level shot from Reuters. But you know... Obama sucks... Romney sucks... carry on.

I wait with eager anticipation how Ryan and Romney will privatize those expenses and move the retirement age out like they want to do for everyone else. If their party wants to start wars every few years, they need to figure out how to pay for them with something other than my medicare and social security payments.

Its not necessarily Ryan's plan, as far as I know but their plan is to move the retirement age for military personnel to 60. We don't have to stay in until 60 but we can't collect until then. Still need to stay in 20 but can't collect for roughly 15 years.

Coburn from OK, is making a big push for this new pension plan. He doesn't think its fair that military personnel can retire in their 40s and collect their pension. He also wants to increase how much retirees pay into their health care plan. He wants to increase the contribution as much as 7 times what we are paying now. Again, he says its a fairness issue, not cost. Not surprisingly, he's pretty much standing alone on this one. But the pensions will change drastically in the next few years.
