With our luck Bob would sell to his brother or let his daughter take over like Selig did.

What a clusterfuck of a ninth inning last night. Just use one fucking guy that's been decent recently and let him get a feel for the game and go for it. Hard to criticize the guy with all those rings, but I really don't like how Bochy handled the ninth. If I was a Giants fan (penguin?) I'd be hopping mad right now!

From a report on the Nats-Dodgers game that I missed:

Manager's special: With the Nats threatening to retake the lead in the bottom half of the seventh with no out and a runner on base, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts turned to closer Kenley Jansen. Jansen, who had not pitched in the seventh inning since 2013, worked his way out of the jam by striking out Jayson Werth and Anthony Rendon.

But what about their roles?

Honestly, that is the best way to use your best reliever.

I don't understand why in the playoffs, the most important time of the year, it's OK to use your relievers in whatever way you see fit. But during the season, managers worry their relievers would have a mental breakdown if you used your closer anytime other than the ninth inning.

It allows managers to be lazy and avoid criticism. If you bring in the closer and he blows the save, you as manager did your job. Follow the book and avoid criticism.

Yep, they are more worried about being criticized than they are about putting their team in the best position to win.

Is it fear of criticism? Or coddling players and the sexy stats (saves, in this case) that drive up their market value?

Some of both but mostly fear of criticism. When a manager brings the closer in and the closer fails, most times the manager won't even be questioned.

Maybe that means Bell will start at 1B and Jaso is a utility man. That would be OK.

More accurately would be to say that SRod just got too expensive for their payroll.

I am ok with that if they go with Frazier in that spot instead of some retread that they pay $3 mil to, and then cry about money as the reason they did not sign a real pitcher.

So much for the shit head GM saying they were going to focus on run prevention
Jose Tabata, Pedro Alvarez, and Andrew McCutchen are the new Jason Kendall, Brian Giles, and Kevin Young (in his prime) players that are good, but surrounded by crap which will make them losers.

Yep. Don't think they'll eat Jasos salary or find a willing trade partner. Getting him ready to be a utility guy is much better than handing him the starting first base job again.
"We’ll be comfortable adding one (starter),” he said. “We’ll be comfortable adding nobody if it’s just not there. We don’t feel we are driven to force it. If we can add one that makes sense for us, that’s great. If we can add two that make sense … then we do that.”
Opie Taylor. In a decisive moment.

I predicted that. Next season Searage will be gone then Opie will fire Hurdle in his last stand.

This is tremendous news, Sofield absolutely sucked and Leyva was a buffoon (not sure why he's not being completely canned as well). Not that they make that much of a difference, but for all the Pirates talk of maximizing small advantages, they need to have top-shelf coaches since they can afford to overpay them without affecting Nutting's wallet.
