In the last 23 games for Oakland, good 'ol Jack is 9-59 with 3 doubles, 8 walks, and 29Ks. Oh yeah, and 2 RBIs.

That works out to .153/.254/.203/.457.

Yikes.

He's OPSing .883 for the year.

That would fall somewhere between one, and one, for our offensive baseball team.

He wont be making 18 million dollars when he's 39 yearsold, either.

the walks are great but he drives in too many runs and receives negative points for excelling in such a worthless stat

and he dives too much

The obvious concern with Cust, for me atleast, is a clear lack of MVP votes and/or 40-40 seasons.

HAH!!!!

Dairy Queen indeed!

I said a couple of weeks ago that he might not even make it to the end of June before he is sent down. If it wasn't for one Adam Hyzdu circa July 2002-esque 10 game stretch, nobody except JWill would know Cust's name.

From May 10 to May 19, he had OPS'd 1.596

http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/gl.cg...7&t=b#74:83:sum

Since then, in twice the amount of games, his OPS has been .502.

I still think, as I stated then, that Cust is gone once Piazza comes off the DL.

Keep defending shitty play on the basis of about 6 games as MVK pointed out.

Indeed.

Let's discount every good game an offensive player hits in, while bolding every poor one they play.

Then, we can pick and choose which players are good, and which players aren't.

Or.........

We can combine statistics as a hole and realize that Jack Cust would have the best OPS on the Pirate team.

Noone said Cust is a savior. Not me, nor Bayliss, nor Winter, nor anyone else. He'd be a cheap and productive upgrade over just about any banjo on our roster.

And thus far, sporatic ABs be damned, Jack Cust and his .883 OPS (.387 OBP) has proven to be just that.

It remains to be seen how he fairs in the MVP voting, however. Judgement reserved.

He will most certainly garner the same amount of votes as Jason Kendall

And not nearly as many as Soriano

Bay is 5 for 35 (.140) with 9 strikeouts his last 10 games, people do have bad streaks. I could give a shit about Cust, but the fact is, nobody is always hot.

so when it suits your needs, JWill, we can talk about sample size, but when it comes to Jack Cust having 30 great at bats and the rest less than mediocre, well, 100 at bats is more than enough to declare Cust the Muhammed Ali of baseball.

and I stand by my assertion that I made two weeks ago that Xavier Nady will end the year with a higher OPS than Jack Cust.

the only saving grace may be if Jack Cust is sent down tomorrow after another horrible day at the plate.

Cust isn't getting sporadic at bats. He's played essentially every day since his hot streak began.

And 23 games isn't picking and choosing. That's 1/8 of a season. That's a lot.

10 game slumps are one thing. 23 game implosions are another. He'll be gone by the ASB.

Great post Monarch!!!

I love it when Cust is exposed as the fraud he is. If he played the rest of the season his OPS would be somewhere around .600.

Dear Mr Cust,

Go take a seat next to Michael Restovich in AAAA land.

so two nights ago on the radio broadcast I hear Bob Walk (I think it was him but it might have been Wehner) say something like:

it seems like every year there's some guy who comes out and hits a bunch of home runs in the early part of the season and then disappears. Wasn't there some former Pirate farmhand who did that last year? I think he eventually was sent down to the minors.

O.k. so who thinks for one second that Walk didn't know that it was Chris Shelton?

It was Walk, and it was hilarious. I think he was actually talking about Cust before he said that, but i'm pretty sure he had to know it was Shelton.

And the prospect of comparing Cust to Shelton is idiotic, at best.

Shelton was a flawed power hitter who was putting up crazy numbers despite an awful K/BB ratio.

The idea to lose Shelton for nothing was about as idiotic, but putting a guy who didn't do much besides hit the ball out of the ballpark and fluke a BABIP during the duration of his MLB cup of coffee in the same category as Cust is absurde.

He has no concept of the use of auxilary verbs. As much as I like the man, I can hardly tolerate listening to him.

On a related note: Marshall Harris sounded like an illiterate dufus two nights ago. He should be trained to take a deep breath before he begins to speak so he can relax and put some consonants in his words.

Chris Shelton and Cust are about one in the same. I think it's a verygood comparison. You can compare minor league numbers pretty soon as Cust will be gone.

It's absurd to compare Cust to Shelton. I'll agree they are/were similar in they both bounced around a bunch and that the minors may also be the fate of Cust, but they are completely different hitters. To say they are one and the same only show one doesn't know enough about the game of baseball to see the difference.

What's lost in all of this non-sense is that Chris Shelton didn't exactly 'flop' during his tenure with the Tigers after a blazing start.

In 807 major league ABs, Shelton's line (.281/.348/.477) would instantly make him one of the better hitters on our team. Infact, he'd probobly be a more productive 1B than LaRoche has been (and I like LaRoche) for Pittsburgh, and certainly a more productive 1B than Casey has been in Detroit.

Walk, or whoever made that comment, was likely just trying to make himself feel better for what has been another pathetic season for our Pittsburgh Pirate organization.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't 8 walks to 29 ABs pretty awful?

First of all, looking at anything for 29 ABs is crazy.

Secondly, without a calculator handy, I'm fairly certain 8 walks in 29 ABs is pretty good.

QUOTE (monarch0 @ Jun 14 2007, 03:40 PM)
Cust isn't getting sporadic at bats. He's played essentially every day since his hot streak began.

And 23 games isn't picking and choosing. That's 1/8 of a season. That's a lot.

10 game slumps are one thing. 23 game implosions are another. He'll be gone by the ASB.

I love the irrelevant Ollie/Cust threads. Its like watching MILFs on the beach. Well not really. But its fun to watch such intensity over such meaningless things. I call it the Seinfeld charm to this board.

Monarch, though ususally right on point in these arguments, just made the same point DJF would use to show Woosh is a piece of shit. Woosh had more than 23 games of true suckitude under his belt to start the year.

And the prospect of comparing Cust to Shelton is idiotic, at best.

Shelton was a flawed power hitter who was putting up crazy numbers despite an awful K/BB ratio.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't 8 walks to 29 ABs pretty awful?

You would be wrong. Extrapolate that over 600 at bats.

Unless I'm being a math retard, and correct me if I'm wrong.

8 walks to 29Ks, in 60 ABs. Yes, that is bad. And that's not that small a sample.

Shelton and Cust both suck therefore are comparable.

That's like saying 'Must Love Dogs' and 'Saw III' are the same movie because they both sucked.

You guys are no fun at all. I love to agitate Cust lovers.

In all honesty, the only thing the 2 have in common is everyone jumped on their jocks too quick after a good month. They aren't similar hitters. Neither one is all that good either.

That's like saying 'Must Love Dogs' and 'Saw III' are the same movie because they both sucked.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the vast majority 'jumped into his jock' because of the career .285/.429/.514 line he holds in the minor leagues.

Or the .293/.467/.549 he put up in 441 ABs a year ago.

If we had 9 Jack Custs in our lineup we would never have to swing, all of their superior plate discipline would bring in 8 runs per game simple by walking.

In the last 23 games, he'd create .1127 runs per 27 outs. 9 Jack Custs = 1 Humberto Cota.

I love when other people bring things up, knowing full well the reaction it's going to get, and then get upset when the reaction comes.

Jack Cust has put up really, really good minor league numbers. Myself, and a few others, felt that if Cust were given a chance at the MLB level, he'd be a productive MLB hitter.

Then, despite others repeated hatred towards a guy for no apparent reason, he is doing just that (.880+ OPS).

And then, when he does, they point to an arbitrary spot in time to tell people why this player is awful, completely disregarding other spots that don't support their theory.

It's an extremely flawed approach, and quite frankly, I'll continue to let them know about it when the topic arises.

I would just like to point out Cust's OPS is falling like a rock. It was 1.400 when he was hot. While .880 is respectable it's been around 550 (Cota-like) the last few weeks. If Cust played the rest of the season I'd be shocked if his OPS was over .600. I'd really stop using his OPS to prove his worthiness.

Fact is much like Shelton last year he got some fastballs early and proved he could hit them. Now the pitchers have adjusted and his avg, power and OPS have all dramatically fallen off. ABout the only thing he's good for is OBP. He's still managed to walk quite a bit despite his struggles. He's not young so hes not going to change his stripes any tme soon.

Jack Cust is not the type of player we need. In fact after Piazza comes back I doubt you see him in a major league uni ever again.

First and foremost, stop comparing Cust and Shelton. Two completely different situations from two completely different offensive baseball players.

Secondly, how do you think statistics are derived? You take the good. You take the bad. You add them together, and you get an average.

I hate to break it to you, but a .280 hitter like Jason Bay doesn't get 28/100 of a hit everytime he steps into the box. Oddly enough.

but what is the record of the A's when Cust plays?
maybe the pitchers feel more comfortable with him on the field
the end all-be all stat for all players is the teams record when he is on the field, it has nothing to do with ability offensively or defensively

the A's are 8-2 over the last 10 games Cust has appeared in so obviously he should continue to play even if his average drops below .100

In two weeks, Jack Cust will either be A. not on a major league roster or B. Posting an OPS well below .800, and your argument that he's still "in total above average" will be gone by the wayside.

does anybody know the difference over the course of 600 at bats that .030 OBP makes?

18 times on base...

yes, clearly that is such a defining stat that a guy who OBP's .375 is so much better than a .345 guy.

and Jack Cust will be in AAA again by end of June to put up his monster numbers again.

Just call him Adam Hyzdu.

does anybody know the difference over the course of 600 at bats that .030 OBP makes?

18 times on base...

yes, clearly that is such a defining stat that a guy who OBP's .375 is so much better than a .345 guy.

Now that's just one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

Does anyone know what the difference between a .275 hitter and a .300 hitter is over the course of 600 ABs?

15 hits. AKA 2.5 more hits per month.

Yes that clearly is such a defining stat, a guy who hits .300 is so much better.

P.S. - You basically proved the point when you said the 375 gets on base 18 more times.

Plus you didn't even calculate it right because for OBP you don't use ABs you use plate appearances.

Hey does anyone know what the difference between a 3.5 ERA and a 4.00 ERA over the course of 180 innings is?

The 3.5 ERA gives up 10 less runs over the 180 innings. Oh what a defining stat that is. The 3.5 is sooooooooooo much better.

Cust (first pitch swinging!) gets himself another single.

3-3 with an 8 pitch walk.

OPS up to .926

Implosion pending though

Cust finally retired after working the count full vs Spezio (so much for the AAAA talk, the only guy to retire him was the only one who wasn't a real ML pitcher).

3-4 with a BB.

OPS only .918

under .600 anytime now

I told you stupid fucks that Jack "fluke" Cust would fall apart after his hot start.

Oh. Wait.

He has a .785 OPS in June?

Boy. I feel like an idiot.

I didn't say a word about the dude for weeks until Monarch came in flacking a 30 AB sample size to prove that he was right. So, likewise, I'll showcase 6 hits in his last 7 ABs to those who said his OPS would be under .600 (!) by months end.

It's the nature of the beast.

It was 70 PAs over 3 weeks, hardly a 30 AB sample.

A .949 OPS for the year.

I'd be more impressed if the last two days weren't off the 28th best pitching staff in the majors.

Shelton had a 1.012 OPS through 134 PAs last year too. And then fell off the planet 2 weeks later.

We will see what happens. For the record, I never said his OPS would fall below .600. That'd be pretty much impossible given the 8 home runs in like a week and a half. I did say it'd be below .800 in two weeks. Two weeks may be a bit soon considering his last few plate appearances against the St. Louis "pitchers," but i'm still pretty sure it'll get there soon. Its tough for anyone to sustain a good OPS striking out in half your ABs without posting a ridiculously lucky BABIP.
